This highly popular type of pen is relatively new in the world of Arabic calligraphy. It was introduced by Javanese pilgrims to Mecca in the beginning of 19th century and quickly gained reputation for its ability to retain sharpness even after prolonged use.  It is frequently noted, that one of the great Ottoman calligraphers Hasan Riza Efendi was able to copy the Quran in its entirety on a single cut of his java pen.
